Researchers Claim Silver Nanoparticles Make for a “Better Anti-dandruff Shampoo Formulation”
In a clinical study titled “Anti-Malassezia furfur Activity of Natural Surfactant Mediated In-Situ Silver Nanoparticles for a Better Antidandruff Shampoo Formulation,” published in January 2016 in the chemical sciences journal RSC Advances, researchers pointed out that the dandruff-causing fungus Malassezia furfur was becoming resistant to common anti-dandruff drugs and medications.
They wrote, “…in many cases the dandruff-causing fungi, Malassezia furfur, develops resistance towards commonly used antidandruff drugs; as a result, it necessary to develop a new class of novel antidandruff shampoo for dual purposes.” So the researchers tested silver nanoparticles in a liquid media similar to shampoo and found a significant anti-fungal effect against the dandruff-causing M. furfur fungus. What’s more, they found that the silver nanoparticles remained stable in the liquid media they used, and protected the liquid media from microbial contamination.
The researchers concluded the silver nanoparticles showed “potential as an active antidandruff simple shampoo formulation.”
