Novel Microfilaricidal (Anti-Parasite) Activity of Nanosilver
This clinical study found that nanosilver has potent anti-parasite effects against the larval stage of the parasite Brugia malayi, a roundworm which infects millions of people in India, China and throughout southeast Asia.
The parasite causes a disease known as elephantitis (i.e., elephantiasis), which is characterized by intense and sometimes grotesque swelling of the legs. This may be the first time that silver has been clinically demonstrated to be effective against parasites in any stage beyond the egg stage. The researchers also found nanosilver to be safe when used against this parasite.
