Could Colloidal Silver Have Saved this 8-Year Old Boy from Flesh-Eating Bacteria?

According to a Fox News article, 8-year old Liam Flanagan “took a tumble off his bike on the driveway of his family’s farm” in Oregon, and suffered a large gash on his thigh.

He was rushed to the local emergency room, where the doctors put seven stitches in the wound, “slapped on a bandage” and sent him home.

But within days he was in severe pain. So his mom took him back to the hospital where it was discovered his wound had become infected with flesh-eating bacteria, resulting in a condition known as necrotizing fasciitis, in which the skin is eaten away by the bacteria.

Even antibiotic drugs and repeated surgical removal of the infected tissue resulting in the removal of much of the flesh on the right side of his body didn’t help. “They basically cut him up piece by piece,” the boy’s step-father told reporters. “They kept cutting and hoping. Cutting and hoping.”

Young Liam died of the infection several days afterwards.

According to MayoClinic.com, the condition known as necrotizing fasciitis, or flesh-eating disease, happens when certain drug-resistant strains of bacteria “enter the body through a break in the skin.”

The condition generally spreads quickly because the pathogen is so aggressive. Symptoms can include blisters, fever, fatigue, and pain worse than a person would expect based on the wound’s appearance. Gradually, the skin can turn purple as tissue and muscle is destroyed.

Treatment involves immediate delivery of IV antibiotics. Surgical removal of dead or infected tissue from the wound is often required.

The so-called “flesh eating bacteria” behind the condition known as necrotizing fasciitis can vary. It’s frequently caused by drug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).

But it can also be caused by Group A Streptococcus (group A strep), Klebsiella, Clostridium, Escherichia coli, and others.

Would Colloidal Silver Help?

I expressed concern that if we couldn’t heal his bedsores, how would we be able to heal an amputation. I was told that the MRSA was not colonized directly below the knee and the skin would heal there. But I was skeptical. I also didn’t know how he would handle anesthesia because of his size and inability to lay down flat for any length of time.

So I asked the doctor to let me try something for one month and he just said, “At his point we have nothing to lose except his leg.” He said he was going to call in a prescription for another high strength antibiotic. History showed us that as long as he stayed on the antibiotics, the progression of the MRSA would slow down. But within two weeks of getting off of the antibiotics, he would get very ill again.

As we drove home, I explained my Colloidal Silver idea to my friend. This was on a Thursday, I believe. I gave him a quart of silver to drink and a quart for his wounds. I told him to take a “drink of approximately 1/4 cup” twice a day.
