After Edison showed the world how to harness and utilize electricity in 1879, scientists quickly discovered that they could suspend silver rods in pure water, and sinter tiny silver particles off of them by running electricity through them.
This became known as electrically-generated colloidal silver. Chemical processes were also invented for making a variety of colloidal silver solutions.
And by the 1930s, colloidal silver in its various forms had become one of the most popular infection-fighting substances among doctors, being sold under the names of Collargol, Protargol, Electrargol, Lunasol and many others.
But after the advent of prescription antibiotic drugs in the late 1930s, colloidal silver usage gradually fell out of favor with doctors. Antibiotic drugs were widely embraced in its stead.
However, by the 1970s – less than 40 years after the advent of prescription antibiotic drugs – it was already being documented by medical science that antibiotic drugs had begun to lose their effectiveness against pathogens relatively rapidly, as the pathogens mutated in response to their presence.
In his article, “Why Are Drug-Resistant Germs From Hospitals Now Spreading Into the General Population?“, Michael J. Berens of the Chicago Tribune writes,
“Beginning in the 1940s, penicillin was the first line of defense against staph, killing nearly every germ. By 1982, penicillin was effective in less than 10 percent of cases…
As penicillin’s effectiveness waned, doctors turned to methicillin, a more powerful antibiotic. In 1974, the replacement drug killed 98 percent of staph germs. By the mid-1990s, it could kill just half of them, and the percentage of staph germs resistant to methicillin is rising.
The problem facing the medical community is that germs, which multiply into millions of one-cell organisms every few minutes, can undergo spontaneous mutations that result in resistance. Every time an antibiotic is used, it presents another opportunity for the germs’ genetic material, their DNA, to mutate and be passed on to the next generations of germs.
‘We humans can take generations to adapt to stress,’ said the U. of C.’s Daum. ‘Bugs can take minutes.'” [Ed. Note: emphasis mine]
As a result of these findings, some doctors in the 1970s began researching the older medical literature, asking themselves, “How did we treat infections prior to the advent of prescription antibiotic drugs?”
This lead researchers and cutting-edge doctors to begin looking for alternatives to prescription antibiotics.
…and that’s how interest in silver slowly began making a comeback.
Dr. Robert O. Becker, M.D.
In the mid-1970s, a surgeon named Dr. Robert O. Becker, M.D. had begun his groundbreaking research at Syracuse Medical University, which would lead to the widespread re-discovery of silver as an effective antimicrobial substance.
He had been attempting to demonstrate his theory that small micro-currents of electricity could be used to make stubborn bone fractures heal if electrodes could be temporarily surgically implanted into the fractures.
During the course of his experiments, he began using silver electrodes in order to take advantage of silver’s well-known propensity to conduct electricity. But what he discovered in the process took him completely by surprise.
You see, not only did the micro-currents of electricity trigger the bone fractures to heal just as he had expected, but the tiny, electrically generated silver particles that were driven into the bone and surrounding tissue from the silver electrodes healed ALL nearby infections as well.
Even rare and potentially deadly bone infections such as osteomyelitis were rapidly healed! Dr. Becker later concluded in his best-selling book The Body Electric:
“What we have done was rediscover the fact that silver kills bacteria, a fact which had actually been known for centuries…
…All of the organisms we tested were sensitive to the electrically generated silver ion, including some that were resistant to all known antibiotics…In no case were any undesirable side effects of the silver treatment apparent.”
Yes, indeed. Dr. Becker had re-discovered a fact that medical researchers of old had once known, but that had become lost to medicine ever since the age of prescription antibiotic drugs had been ushered in by the global pharmaceutical conglomerates during the 1940s.
He had re-discovered the fact that silver – one of the world’s oldest and most powerful natural antibiotic substances – could kill just about any pathogen exposed to it. Even the most virulent pathogens succumb to it with ease!
Since that time, colloidal silver has once again become the world’s most popular and effective natural antibiotic substance.
Research Proves Colloidal Silver’s Effectiveness Against Staph Infections
In addition to the above-mentioned research, there are some recent clinical studies that demonstrate colloidal silver to be highly effective against infection-causing pathogens, including those that antibiotic drugs no longer work against.
While Big Pharma is busy claiming we’re “running out of effective antibiotics,” and continues to warn of an “drug-resistant superbug apocalypse,” might we have, in silver, the only answer we need to this drug-resistant superbug crisis?
Here are brief summaries of just four of the most recent clinical studies demonstrating silver to quite literally destroy numerous forms of drug-resistant pathogens:
Clinical Study #1: Colloidal Silver Kills up to 99.7% of Six Multidrug-resistant Superbugs: In this fascinating clinical study titled, “Bactericidal effect of silver nanoparticles against multidrug-resistant bacteria,” published in the World Journal of Microbiology and Biotechnology in 2009, it was found that antimicrobial silver killed up to 99.7% of drug-resistant bacteria, including some of the most virulent multidrug-resistant strains. The study authors stated: “In our study, antimicrobial silver nanoparticles exerted a bactericidal effect against six drug-resistant bacterial strains… the same nanosilver concentration inhibited 99.7% of erythromycin-resistant Streptococcus pyogenes, 95.7% of ampicillin-resistant E. coli and 92.8% of multidrug-resistant P. aeruginosa.”
The researchers further concluded that silver exhibited a bactericidal effect rather than merely a bacteriostatic effect. That’s important news because it means the use of antimicrobial silver is so effective against drug-resistant strains, it outright kills them rather than merely inhibiting their growth!
Clinical Study #2: Colloidal Silver Kills Antibiotic-Resistant Staph, E. Coli, Pseudomonas, and Salmonella: In this clinical study, titled “Colloidal Silver as a New Antimicrobial Agent,” published in the respected International Journal of Microbiological Research in 2010, the researchers demonstrated that colloidal silver effectively decimated antibiotic-resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Salmonella typhi.
The researchers concluded, “Resistant clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Salmonella typhiwere used as the test organisms. This study demonstrated powerful antimicrobial activity of colloidal silver against all multidrug-resistant clinical pathogens tested.”
Clinical Study #3: Colloidal Silver Kills 49 Different Strains of Antibiotic-Resistant Superbugs – Including Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus: In this clinical study titled “The Antimicrobial Efficacy of Silver on Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria Isolated From Burn Wounds,” conducted by researchers at the Department of Pathology at West Virginia University, and published in the International Wound Journal in October 2012, a total of 49 different antibiotic-resistant bacteria were isolated from burn wounds and tested against silver.
These deadly, drug-resistant pathogens included Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium, Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa, multidrug-resistant Vibrio sp, drug-resistant Klebsiella pneumonia, drug-resistant Escherichia coli, multidrug-resistant Acinetobacterbaumannii and 42 others. After exposing these drug-resistant pathogens to antimicrobial silver the researchers concluded, “…all forty-nine antibiotic-resistant bacteria showed susceptibility to the antimicrobial activity of silver…”
Clinical Study #4: Review of Multiple Additional Studies Demonstrating Silver’s Ability to Decimate Drug-Resistant Superbugs – Including MRSA and MRSE: In an extensive review of previous clinical studies on silver’s ability to decimate multidrug-resistant super-pathogens, titled “Silver Nanoparticles: the Powerful Nanoweapon Against Multidrug-Resistant Bacteria,” and published in the February 2012 issue of the prestigious Journal of Applied Microbiology, researchers reviewed and featured about a dozen clinical studies demonstrating silver’s effectiveness against multidrug-resistant pathogens including Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Streptococcus mutans, methicillin resistant Staphylococcus epidermidis (MRSE), Salmonella typhi, Erythromycin-resistant Streptococcus pyogenes, ampicillin-resistant Escherichia coli, multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus vulgaris, Klebsiella pneumonia, vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (VRSA), and methicillin-resistant Enterococcus faecium among others.
The researchers concluded that “silver nanoparticles are the new hope to treat drug-resistant bacteria,” and that silver represents a “multi-actional nanoweapon that can be used for the treatment and prevention of drug-resistant microbes.” They further concluded, “…silver nanoparticles having bactericidal potential would be used as powerful weapons against the multidrug-resistant bacteria such as Ps. aeruginosa, ampicillin-resistant E. coli, erythromycin-resistant Strep. pyogenes, MRSA, and VRSA.”
As you can see from the above clinical studies, there’s hardly a superbug in existence that hasn’t been demonstrated by clinical research to be sensitive to antimicrobial silver. And yes, as you’ll see below, that even includes the more deadly MRSA pathogen!
Yet the powers-that-be won’t use it, because they can’t patent, monopolize and make billions of dollars in profits from this safe and completely natural substance.
Colloidal Silver Kills MRSA, Too!
Of course, the most famous of all antibiotic-resistant pathogens is MRSA, which is short for Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureaus. In other words, the MRSA superbug is resistant to almost all know antibiotics, including methicillin, known as the “last resort” of antibiotic drugs.
MRSA, which kills a staggering 20% of those whose infections go blood borne – that’s some 94,000 people per year – has now moved out of the hospitals where it originally started, and into communities.
In fact, the vast majority of new MRSA cases are referred to as CA-MRSA infections, or “community acquired MRSA infections,” because they’re acquired in the general public, i.e., by touching contaminated surfaces such as door knobs, shopping carts, counter tops, movie theater seats, supermarket meats (MRSA now contaminates up to 50% of all supermarket meats), or even simply shaking hands with your neighbor.
But MRSA, too, is highly susceptible to the infection-fighting power of antimicrobial silver. So much so that four more clinical studies have demonstrated silver’s astonishing effectiveness against the deadly MRSA pathogen.
Let’s take a quick look at them:
Case Study #1: A Brigham-Young Clinical Study Proves Colloidal Silver Kills MRSA: In this study, conducted at Brigham-Young University, and published in the journal Current Science, it was found that a number of the antibiotic drugs which formerly killed drug-resistant pathogens such as MRSA could actually be restored to full efficacy against the deadly pathogens, but only if a liquid solution of colloidal silver was used in conjunction with the drug! Since these antibiotic drugs had previously lost their effectiveness against the super-pathogens, this study clearly demonstrates that the silver was the deciding factor in the deaths of the deadly drug-resistant pathogens!
Case Study #2: Iranian Clinical Study Proves Silver Increases Effectiveness of Antibiotic Drugs Against Staph: This study was conducted by the Department of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology and Medical Nanotechnology Research Center at the University of Tehran, Iran, and published in the journal Nanomedicine. It demonstrated that the addition of silver to three specific antibiotics (vancomycin, amoxicillin and penicillin) almost magically renews their effectiveness against today’s most deadly pathogens, including MRSA!
Case Study #3: Taiwanese Clinical Study Proves Colloidal Silver By Itself Kills MRSA: Another study, this one conducted in Taiwan, also demonstrated that silver colloids kill both MRSA and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, another deadly and extremely opportunistic superbug. In this study, a special colloidal silver solution was tested on contact surfaces where the deadly pathogens are known to colonize, and from which they can spread to humans. The silver solution proved to be completely effective against both the MRSA and Pseudomonas super pathogens!
The study, which demonstrated conclusively that silver could be applied to contact surfaces to stop colonies of MRSA super pathogens from forming, was titled, “Formation of colloidal silver nanoparticles stabilized by Na(+)-poly(gamma-glutamic acid)-silver nitrate complex via chemical reduction process,” and was conducted at the Department of Textile Science, Nanya Institute of Technology, Chung-Li, Tao-Yuan, Taiwan. It was published in the journal Colloids Surface B Biointerfaces in October 2007.
Case Study #4: Czech Clinical Study Proves Silver Particles Kill MRSA: This study was conducted at the Department of Physical Chemistry at Palacky University in the Czech Republic. It was later published in the prestigious Journal of Physical Chemistry B in August 2006. Titled “Silver colloidal nanoparticles: synthesis, characterization, and their antibacterial activity,” the study demonstrated that “…silver particles with a narrow size distribution with an average size of 25 nm showed high antimicrobial and bactericidal activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including multi-resistant strains such MRSA.” The study further demonstrated that very low concentrations of silver could be utilized to destroy MRSA, as long as the silver particles were very small, averaging 25 nm.
So there you have it: Antimicrobial silver has been clinically proven over and over again to be effective against staph infections – including the deadly MRSA pathogen – and many other antibiotic-resistant superbugs.

The problem, of course, is that when MRSA penetrates the skin through a scratch or nick – even something so innocuous as a minor razor cut, a paper cut, or scratches from playing with the family dog (or children playing out in the yard) – it rapidly begins to proliferate out-of-control and spread throughout the body.
You see, the body’s internal milieu is far richer than the skin in the nutrient-rich fluid media the MRSA pathogen needs in order to rapidly proliferate and spread. So once it’s able to make its way inside the human body through a simple cut or scratch, it spreads like wildfire, and is far more difficult to control.
Indeed, epidemiologists point out that while MRSA infections “were once seen almost exclusively in ill and immune-compromised hospital patients, they have now become increasingly common in otherwise healthy people over the past decade.”
This is why the community-acquired form of MRSA (the kind you get simply by being out in public) is now so rampant, outpacing hospital-acquired MRSA infections by leaps and bounds.
What’s more, as you’ll see as you continue to read, the only “risky behavior” you have to engage in to contract a potentially deadly MRSA infection is to go shopping at your local supermarket…or shake hands with a neighbor, friend or co-worker…or go to the local gym to work out…or eat out at a local restaurant…or go to the movies…or just about anything in public places where “touch surfaces” can hold the deadly MRSA pathogen!
Children and MRSA: the Silent Epidemic
Unfortunately, children seem to be taking the brunt of these “increasingly common” MRSA infections.
According to a medical study by Dr. Patrick Romano of the University of California at Davis, child hospitalization due to MRSA infections have doubled since the year 2000. And admissions for severe skin infections like MRSA now rank as the seventh most common reason for hospital admission among children, which is up from 13th in 2000.
Dr. Romano says mutations in the MRSA organism have made it more virulent and easier to transmit. He states:
“We continue to see more severe, life-threatening infections affecting the blood, lungs, muscles and even bones of previously healthy children. We have to live with the fact that it’s out there, all around us in the community. At this point, we expect a certain level of these infections…Now, it’s a matter of recognizing the early signs and treating it early when we see it.”
What Dr. Romano doesn’t mention is exactly how high the “certain level of these infections” has become. Indeed, according to the medical journal Pediatrics, MRSA infections have led to nearly 30,000 child hospitalizations in recent years – mostly school kids.
In 1999, only two out of every 1,000 hospitalizations were for children with serious MRSA infections. Now, it’s 21 in every 1,000 hospitalizations. And the rate continues to climb.
What’s more, according to U.S. News & World Report, “This new breed of MRSA is community-acquired rather than hospital-acquired. It survives on surfaces as well as on hands, and can cause severe, even lethal infections in otherwise healthy children.”
Hospital Studies Demonstrate
MRSA Has Now Gone Airborne!
Another dirty little secret the health and medical authorities are apparently trying to avoid letting you know is this: As far back as 2001, clinical researchers discovered that MRSA can easily become airborne and infect people by lodging in the nasal passages and lungs after it’s breathed in.
In fact, a study published in the Archives of Otolaryngol Head and Neck Surgery demonstrates that MRSA was very easily spread among patients in a hospital through the airborne route, and may be responsible for many cases of hospital-borne MRSA infections. According to the study authors:
“Methicillin-resistant S aureus was re-circulated among the patients, the air, and the inanimate environments, especially when there was movement in the rooms. Airborne MRSA may play a role in MRSA colonization in the nasal cavity or in respiratory tract MRSA infections. Measures should be taken to prevent the spread of airborne MRSA to control nosocomial MRSA infection in hospitals.”
In other words, as long as everything was perfectly still in the hospital rooms, MRSA didn’t go airborne. But as soon as there was significant movement in the hospital rooms – such as the changing of bed sheets, or the moving of hospital equipment, or dusting and cleaning – the MRSA pathogens easily went airborne, and were carried throughout the hospital room on the ambient air currents.
Indeed, the study states:
“…clinical isolates of MRSA in our ward were of one origin, and the isolates from the air and from inanimate environments were identical to the MRSA strains that caused infection or colonization in the in-patients.”
Yes, the study found that the exact same MRSA strains found to be airborne were also found to be colonizing the nasal passages and lungs of the hospital patients and causing drug-resistant infections. According to the study authors, this strongly suggests the patients were being contaminated with MRSA via the airborne route.
What’s more, the researchers found that airborne samples of MRSA and other bacteria increased a staggering 50 times over in hospital rooms when the air was sampled directly after bed sheets were changed.
According to the study authors:
“This suggests that airborne MRSA may play a role in MRSA colonization in the nasal cavity or in respiratory MRSA infections. When medical staff were present in the rooms of patients, the number of Colony Forming Units of MRSA increased in and around the rooms. This indicates that MRSA on surface environments spreads during periods of movement, such as when bed sheets are changed in hospitals.”
In other words, whenever there was movement in a hospital room, such as hospital staff changing bed sheets, MRSA was spread throughout the room and began colonizing additional areas of the room.
Indeed, one 1998 study published in the Journal of Hospital Infections was titled “Ventilation grilles as a potential source of MRSA, causing an outbreak in an orthopedic ward at a district general hospital.” So apparently, the newly airborne MRSA pathogens can even colonize the ventilation grilles in hospital rooms, and literally be spread further throughout the rooms whenever the heat or air conditioning comes on – even enough to cause an outbreak of MRSA infections!
And to make things even scarier, the researchers in the 2001 hospital study went on to state:
“…In this study, we confirmed that MRSA could be acquired by medical staff and patients through airborne transmission. The findings suggest the importance of protecting patients against cross-infectious agents existing in aerosols.”
“Aerosols” means tiny drops of liquid that are airborne. Translation: Even coughing can spread the MRSA pathogen to others once a patient’s nasal cavities or lungs have been infected through the airborne route.
Finally, the study authors pointed out that as far back as 1998 it was already thought by some researchers that MRSA could be spread by coughing:
“MRSA in the form of a bio-aerosol can contaminate the air and cause airborne infectious diseases.”
“Bio-aerosol” simply means liquid droplets in the air that come from a human body. Again, it’s just a ten dollar medical term for coughing.
Of course, what can happen in a hospital room can happen in a home just as easily. This may well be one reason why MRSA infections that occur in the home – often referred to as “community acquired MRSA – tend to be spread to other family members rather quickly.
If for example, a family member were to have an MRSA infection and precautions aren’t taken during the changing of bed sheets, or when the infected individual coughs, the MRSA pathogen can go airborne in the home and potentially contaminate other areas of the home and infect other family members.
Surviving a MRSA Infection?
According to the MRSAid Blog, of those who manage to survive a MRSA infection after being treated with intensive cocktails of intravenous antibiotic drugs, many end up facing incredibly difficult recovery periods that often involve staggering amounts of ongoing medications and multiple surgeries. Indeed, as one woman recently wrote to me of her horrific experience with MRSA:
“I went into the hospital with MRSA and was there for 13 weeks. Seven of those were in the Intensive Care Unit. The MRSA went systemic and ate part of my spine. I had six surgeries in five weeks…
…Because of this I now have my spine put together with nuts, bolts, screws, rods, and a cage around my spine. I wear a back brace…This is a miserable existence…Just want people to know that MRSA is easy to get and remember you never get rid of it.”
That story is heartbreaking. But all the more so because there’s no reason the poor woman should have had to endure such a devastating and crippling ordeal that will now affect her for the rest of her life.
