Can Colloidal Silver Help with Eyesight Diseases?
After last week’s article relating to using colloidal silver for styes, I received a question from a reader about whether colloidal silver can help heal or stop the progress of eyesight diseases, such as macular degeneration.
Well according to one registered nurse who wrote me a few years ago – and who also happens to be an experienced colloidal silver user – she is convinced that colloidal silver is dramatically helping her 77-year-old husband who had been diagnosed two and a half years previously with an eyesight disease (specifically Age-Related Macular Degeneration). She says the degeneration of his eyesight had not progressed at all since she started putting two drops of colloidal silver into each of his eyes daily!
Below, I’ll share her personal experience using colloidal silver to help halt the progress of her husband’s degenerative eyesight disease.

Here’s what reader Marie P., a registered nurse, wrote about her rather interesting experience using colloidal silver in the eyes of her 77-year-old husband who has been diagnosed with age-related macular degeneration:
“Two 1/2 years ago my 77-year-old husband was diagnosed with Age Related Macular Degeneration.
Doctor told him to start taking OTC AREDS 2, which is pricey, and return in 6 months. [Editor’s note: OTC AREDS is an over-the-counter multi-vitamin and mineral formula for the eyes, used by people with macular degeneration.]
Just before the 6 months was up, I decided to start putting 2 drops of colloidal silver in each eye every pm. He went for the 6 month checkup while we continued the silver.
When he returned in 6 more months, there was no change and he had to return in a year. He went two days ago for that checkup, and again STILL NO CHANGE! Dr. told him to continue AREDS 2. My husband told him he had not taken it in over a year!
Dr: Then what are you doing?
Husband: Putting colloidal silver drops in my eyes every pm.
Dr: Never heard of it. Where do you get it?
Husband: My wife makes it.
Dr: I’ll have to look that up. Keep doing what you’re doing. Come back in a year.
I seriously doubt he will look it up, but I am convinced that the colloidal silver has arrested the progression of his ARMD. And who knows? Maybe it can even reverse it some, especially in advanced cases! What a blessing colloidal silver and my colloidal silver generator are!”
Now, you’ve got to admit, that’s a fascinating testimonial. Of course, I have to warn you upfront that testimonials are not “proof” of effectiveness for any medical condition. Only clinical studies constitute proof. And truth be told, there’s very little published clinical research on using colloidal silver for eyesight diseases.
However, there is a very interesting overview of clinical studies on the use of nanosilver in the eyes. This overview was published in 2016 in the Journal of Controlled Release, and titled Silver Nano – a Trove for Retinal Therapies.
In that study overview researchers looked at using silver nanoparticles as a treatment for an eyesight condition known as pathological retinal angiogenesis (aka retinal neovascularization) consisting of abnormal growth of blood vessels in the eyes which ultimately leads to irreversible blindness.
What the researchers discovered was that applying nanosilver to the eyes reduced the downstream signaling pathways that lead to retinal angiogenesis. In other words, it helped halt the progression of the condition which otherwise would lead to blindness.
The researchers stated “Gaining the ability to control retinal angiogenesis does not only benefit clinical therapy, but also has an enormous scientific appeal.” They went on to say:
“Silver nanoparticles due to their potent characteristics such as anti-permeability, anti-tubules formation, anti-vasculature development, bear out them as an effective molecule in inhibiting angiogenesis and also capable of inducing apoptosis by altering the caspase-3 activity leading DNA fragmentation…”
In other words, clinical testing has demonstrated that nanosilver has the ability to inhibit the process called angiogenesis in which abnormal blood vessels form in front of the retina, blocking vision, which ultimately leads to blindness in people afflicted with it.
And the silver also causes abnormal blood cells from retinal angiogenesis to go into a state of apoptosis (i.e., cellular suicide) so they can no longer spread over the eye.
The researchers concluded:
“Our studies on the effect of silver nanoparticles over angiogenesis make a significant impact in treating common causes of blindness such as PDR [i.e. proliferative diabetic retinopathy] and AMD [i.e., age-related macular degeneration].
Further studies on size controlled effect of silver nanoparticles and other down streaming pathways, by which they themselves act as a drug, by controlled release and targeting, will surely signify the role of silver nanoparticles for effective and economic treatments in ocular therapies.”
The researchers concluded their research by stating their belief that the use of silver nanoparticles will make a “significant impact” on the treatment of common causes of blindness such as Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy and Age-Related Macular Degeneration.
So there you have it.
A small handful of anecdotal accounts suggest (but do not prove) that just a few drops of colloidal silver used in the eyes daily can help stop the progression of Age-Related Macular Degeneration. And at least some clinical research backs up that assertion, particularly where it pertains to Age-Related Macular Degeneration caused by pathological retinal angiogenesis, or abnormal blood cell formation over the retina.
The researchers behind this study even call nanosilver a “trove for retinal therapies” in the title of their clinical overview, and a “boon to ocular therapies” in their abstract!
Naturally, more research is needed on this subject. For example, there’s not been enough research conducted to determine how long one can safely put silver into one’s eyes without experiencing side effects. Nor has a correct daily dosage yet been determined from clinical research.
But it’s extremely exciting to see this development taking place, clinically, because the preliminary research demonstrates silver to be a viable treatment for one of the leading causes of blindness in developed countries, which is pathological retinal angiogenesis, otherwise known as retinal revascularization.
