DMG - the Anti-Aging "Feel Young Again" Superstar of the 21st Century
Life & Health: George, we're going to be talking about DMG today. As you know, it's a unique nutritional supplement, but it's not really new at all. It's been around for quite some time. But it's now making a dramatic comeback, and its newfound popularity is astonishing, to say the least. Can you explain what DMG is, and why it's suddenly gaining so much positive attention from nutritional supplement users?
George Foss: Of course. First of all, DMG stands for Dimethylglycine, and is also referred to chemically as N,N-Dimethylglycine. It's basically a B-vitamin derivative, a metabolite of choline and is an essential nutrient to cellular metabolism, brain function, immune system function and even nerve transmission, which means, essentially, that it is one of the crucial nutrients that makes things work in the human body. As part of its structure DMG contains the amino acid glycine, which is used by the body in the formation of neurotransmitters, hemoglobin, collagen, and other essential bodily compounds.
Life & Health: But what's so special about DMG?
George Foss: DMG is required by the body for innumerable vital functions, and when used as a supplement, it significantly boosts each of those vital functions. For example, DMG is required for everything from cellular metabolism to energy production to neuronal activity and other key brain functions. In many ways it is responsible for our ability to retain information in our brain, and it contributes significantly to clarity of thinking. It is also required by the body for peak immune system function. And it is required by the body's 7 trillion cells for proper nutrient absorption. It contributes significantly to the oxygenation of the body's entire cellular metabolism. What's more, it is required by the liver for detoxification of chemicals and other harmful substances. The list of its crucial uses for DMG by the human body, and the list of its tremendous benefits to the body, is so long it would take a 200 page book to describe it all. In short, DMG is absolutely essential to human function.
Life & Health: How do humans get DMG? Is it strictly through foods?
George Foss: Actually, DMG is produced in the liver. It's also taken into the body through diet, but in much smaller quantities. For example, you get a certain amount of DMG every time you eat nuts, seeds, wheat bran or beef liver. But the body's production of DMG is its chief source of the substance.
More importantly, it's another one of those vital substances that the body begins to produce less and less of as we age. So as we get older, bodily functions that are dependent upon DMG suddenly start to slow down, or even begin grinding to a halt. By that I'm talking about things like immune system function, brain function, sexual functioning, bodily strength and agility, cellular metabolism, general stamina, wound and trauma healing, memory retention and physical reaction time. Even things like eyesight and hearing are all affected by the amount of DMG in the body.
Fortunately, supplementing with DMG on a regular basis as we age has some extremely positive benefits. It very rapidly and effectively restores to peak levels the function of many key bodily systems. This is why, for example, the wonderful team of James Balch, M.D. and Phyllis Balch, C.N.C., who wrote the bestselling book Prescription for Nutritional Healing, now recommend DMG for no less than 48 different health conditions. DMG is so necessary to so many bodily functions there are few health conditions in which it is not extremely helpful.
Life & Health: Wow. That's quite an overview. We'll talk a bit more about some of the benefits of DMG in just a moment. But first, can you give us some historical background on it?
George Foss: Certainly. DMG was originally discovered in 1947 by a Japanese doctor by the name of Takamura, who called it vitamin B-15, due to its close relationship to the B-vitamin group.
Later, research by the famed scientists Earnest Krebs, Sr. (who did the groundbreaking research on our body's cellular energy system, which is now known as the Kreb's cycle) and his son Earnest Krebs, Jr. discovered that DMG is much more complex in structure and function than a mere vitamin. For example, as I mentioned earlier, it also contains the key amino acid glycine as part of its basic structure, which is essential in the formation of neurotransmitters, hemoglobin and collagen. What's more, glycine helps create muscle tissue and convert glucose into energy. It is also essential to maintaining healthy central nervous and digestive systems, and has recently been shown to provide antioxidant protection from some types of cancer. Glycine is also used in the body to help construct normal DNA and RNA strands-the genetic material needed for proper cellular function and formation. Finally, it helps prevent the breakdown of muscle tissue by boosting the body's levels of creatine, a compound that helps build muscle mass. So DMG was discovered to offer much more than a simple vitamin.
What's more, Krebs and other researchers found that DMG is used by the liver to make a number of different compounds required for basic bodily functions. These are compounds that the body cannot otherwise get from diet alone. It must have DMG in order to produce these essential, life-enhancing compounds. DMG was also found to help detoxify the body, helping it rid itself of the harmful chemicals and toxins we are all so laden with as we grow older. And it helps the liver properly process fats and oils too. It plays a key role in the body's use of lipids for energy production.
As you noted, it's actually an older supplement. In fact, it has been around for about 30 years. Back in the 1980's when I was general manager of Kayser's Nutrition Center in southern California, it was quite a big seller, particularly among celebrities and other wealthy patrons that frequented our chain of health food stores. But the vast majority of the research on it at the time had been conducted in Russia. And American researchers began pooh-poohing some of the Russian research, because back then the youth-restorative and anti-aging claims being made for DMG seemed too fantastical to be true. So it slowly began to fall out of favor in the U.S. as newer nutritional supplements with western clinical research behind them began to emerge. As a result the general public never really had a chance to become acquainted with the many significant and in some cases quite astonishing anti-aging benefits of DMG.
Nevertheless, there has always been a core group of in-the-know DMG users here in the U.S. For example, football players and other athletes have been taking it for decades. In fact, it has been widely used in the nutritional supplement regimens of almost every major professional sports team, including three-time Super Bowl Championship winners the Washington Redskins. As an aside, DMG was widely considered to be the "secret weapon" used by the Redskins during their three stunning comeback Super Bowl victories from 1983 to 1992. Then, other pro teams found out about it, and quietly began using it themselves. And now they all use it.
What's most interesting now is that updated clinical studies conducted by western researchers over the past decade have completely verified the anti-aging claims that were originally made for DMG based on the older Russian research. What's more, the newer research has brought to light a plethora of previously unknown DMG benefits as well. So DMG is finally getting its day in the sun, and its usage is rapidly growing by word of mouth among the "40-plus" crowd who cherish its extremely uplifting and youth restorative properties.
Life & Health: We hear a lot lately about the safety of nutritional supplements. Some supplements are toxic in higher doses. Is DMG safe? Are there any known problems with toxicity, for example?
George Foss: DMG is actually one of the least toxic of all nutritional supplements on earth. In studies, subjects have been given up to pound of DMG orally over a period of days, with no adverse effects whatsoever, which is astonishing. Now don't try that yourself, of course. That much DMG would have you crawling the walls with excess energy. But I don't think there is any other nutritional supplement on earth which can make a safety claim like that. In fact, try taking a pound of any other nutritional supplement and it will probably kill you.
But what's most interesting to me is that you don't need much DMG to effect some very profound and positive changes in your life and in your health. In fact, when you take as little as 50 to 100 mg. a day of DMG, you really begin to feel the difference right away. I mean, it has some very pronounced benefits, such as increased energy, an overall feeling of well-being, faster thinking, enhanced memory, and particularly greater stamina throughout the day. In other words, you don't burn out as easily in the course of a normal day. It turns energy and stamina deficits into energy and stamina surpluses. That's one of my favorite things about DMG supplementation. Other supplements claim to do this. But DMG actually does it.
Life & Health: What are some of the most unique qualities about DMG?
George Foss: You mean above and beyond what I've already mentioned? There are too many to list. DMG is one of the most uniquely beneficial substances on the face of the earth. For example, DMG has an amazing propensity to keep living things alive longer in hypoxic conditions. In other words, it helps the body remain functional even when there is a lack of oxygen present in the blood stream. Back in the old days, when experimentation on animals was commonplace in research laboratories, researchers found that when lab dogs were administered DMG and put into near vacuum-like conditions in which most of the oxygen was missing, they lived nearly an hour longer than the control dogs. What this demonstrates is that DMG helps the body make the best use of the oxygen available to it, keeping bodily functions going even under environments where poor oxygenation levels would normally inhibit them.
Professor Jerzy W. Meduski, MD of USC studied DMG's remarkable ability to bring about increased oxygenation of the blood. In his studies, he took sedentary people, gave them DMG and studied their blood oxygen levels. He found that simply by taking DMG a sedentary person could increase his or her blood oxygen levels to the same levels as an active person doing aerobic exercise five times a week! That's really quite astonishing when you think about it. What's more, Dr. Meduski found that DMG was as efficient as creatine at removing painful lactic acid buildup from the muscles. So it helps eliminate muscle cramping and pain.
Here's another unique aspect of DMG: It is such a powerful antioxidant, it can often help restore severe gangrenous conditions to normal. The Russians used a compound called AEVIT which was a combination of DMG and several other substances. And at one of the main Moscow hospitals a Russian researcher, Professor Yakow Shpirt, administered AEVIT for 30 days to patients who were going to lose their legs above the knees from gangrene. By the end of that time his patients were not only walking again, but were able to jump over a three foot fence. This was due chiefly to the remarkable antioxidant effects of the DMG in the AEVIT compound.
On a similar note, when DMG first became available I had a coworker, a nice young lady who was involved in a bicycle accident in Santa Barbara. One of the bicycle spokes went through an index finger, and it became severely infected. Antibiotics didn't work. The doctors were going to amputate her finger as far back as the middle knuckle. She was very upset to say the least. At the time, I had just read the Russian translation of Professor Shpirt's work on gangrene and the DMG-based compound AEVIT. So I gave her a bottle of DMG, which was called vitamin B-15 back then, and within two weeks she went back to the doctors and he postponed the amputation because of the very obvious healing that was suddenly taking place. And two weeks after that he cancelled the operation altogether, saying that the tissues had completely healed.
You see, DMG is not just a powerful antioxidant. It is also involved in the formation of antibodies and critical healing substances like IGA, immunoglobulin and others that can bring about profound levels of healing - the kind of rapid healing that we all once had when we were little children.
Life & Health: George, as usual, you are a fount of information. Do you have any final comments on DMG?
George Foss: Yes, I do. The most important thing to understand is that supplementing the diet with higher levels of DMG greatly improves the nutritional environment of the body's 70 trillion cells. That's because it dramatically boosts the uptake of nutrients into the cells. And when the cells have access to more nutrition, they work more efficiently and effectively. This is one reason why DMG boosts the efficiency of the body's entire cellular metabolism, greatly enhancing intercellular communication, and restoring flagging organ and nervous system function to more youthful levels. This is also why DMG users frequently comment that they feel 20 years younger, and are always surprised at the increased mental and physical stamina they gain when they start taking it. I can't emphasize enough that DMG is the real deal, in terms of being a true anti-aging supplement.
